McAlpine Smart Energy Pilot Area of Detail – Charlotte, N.C.

Nearly 16,000 customers in south Charlotte receive electricity distributed through the McAlpine Creek substation.
The substation – located on Hwy. 51 near Carmel Road – is equipped with 213 solar arrays and a large battery.
Duke Energy will use the energy generated by the solar panels to help meet its customers’ energy needs when the demand for electricity is high.
The shaded portion of the map shows an area where 100 customers are participating in a residential energy management program designed to help them manage their energy usage and lower their monthly energy bills.
Duke Energy chose this area of Charlotte for testing smart grid technologies and new energy efficiency programs because it includes a good mix of residential, small business and commercial customers.
